Poetry Terminology 

Alliteration- repetition of the same or similar sounds at the beginning of words.    Analogy- likeness or similarity between things that are otherwise unlike. Comparison of two things that have similar relationships.    
Assonance- repetition or a pattern of similar vowel sounds, but with  different end consonants in a line or passage of verse or prose. Vowel rhyme ex. date and fate.     
Consonance- repetition, at close intervals, of the final consonants of accented syllables or important words,especially at the end of words, ex. blank and think.     Ballad- poems that tell a story similar to a folk tale or legend and often has a repeated refrain.     
Blank Verse- often unobtrusive and the iambic pentameter form often resembles the rhythms of ordinary speech.    
 Figurative Language- a way of saying something other than the literal meaning of the words.     
    Free Verse- poetry composed of either rhymed or unrhymed lines that have no set fixed metrical pattern.
    Haiku- japanese poem composed of three unrhymed line of five, seven, and five syllables.                
    Imagery- draws the reader into poetic experiences by touching on the images and senses which the reader already knows.    

Lyric Poem- poem, such as sonnets or an ode, that expresses the thought and feelings of the poet. Doesn't tell a story which portrays characters and actions.      Narrative Poem- a poem that tells a story and has a plot.     
Ode- long poems which are serious in nature and written to a set structure.     Rhyme- poem which have the repetition of the same or similar sounds at the end of two or more words most often at the end of lines.     
Rhythm- certain words produced with more force. fully then others, and may be held for longer duration. Repetition of a pattern of such emphasis is what produces rhythmic effect.     
Shakespearean Sonnet- sonnet form used by Shakespeare, composed of three quatrains and a terminal couplet in iambic pentameter with the rhyme pattern.     Petrarchan Sonnet- sonnet containing an octave with the rhyme scheme abbaabba and a sestet following any of various patterns such as cdecde or cdcdcd.
